Today's Lithuania surprises visitors with a stunning baroque capital, a magical seacoast along the Curonian Spit, the extraordinary Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai, and vast forests where traditional village life persists. It remains one of Europe's least-visited and most genuinely rewarding destinations.
Vilnius has one of Europe's best-preserved baroque Old Towns — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of church spires, hidden courtyards, and winding cobbled lanes. Gediminas Castle Tower overlooks the city from a 48-metre hill above the Neris River.
One of the most extraordinary religious sites in the world — a low hillside covered with over 100,000 crosses of every size, brought by pilgrims over generations. Bulldozed three times by Soviet authorities, the crosses were always replaced within days.
This narrow UNESCO-listed sand spit stretches 98 km along the Baltic, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the sea. Towering sand dunes, pine forests, traditional fishing villages and amber-strewn beaches make it Baltic's most beautiful natural attraction.
Rising from a lake 28 km from Vilnius, the red-brick Gothic Trakai Island Castle is connected to shore by wooden bridges and surrounded by 21 lakes. The historic town is home to the Karaite community, whose kenesa prayer houses and kibinai pastries are unique.
Lithuania's interwar capital is known for its 1920s Art Deco and modernist architecture, the stunning Žaliakalnis funicular, excellent museums, and a vibrant student atmosphere. The nearby 9th Fort is a sobering memorial to those murdered during World War II.
Lithuania's first national park is a haven of 126 lakes, ancient forests, and traditional wooden villages where beekeeping and basket-weaving traditions survive. Canoe routes through interconnected lakes are among the most relaxing ways to explore rural Lithuania.
June–August offers warm weather and long evenings perfect for exploring. July features the Vilnius Folk Music Festival. September has golden light and fewer crowds. The Christmas period in Vilnius is atmospheric with a beautiful Old Town market.
Vilnius has good city buses and a growing cycling infrastructure. Intercity buses (Lux Express, Toks) are faster and often more convenient than trains for inter-city travel. Renting a car is best for rural areas, the coast, and the Hill of Crosses.
Try cepelinai (potato dumplings stuffed with meat, shaped like zeppelins), šaltibarščiai (cold pink beetroot soup), kibinai (Karaite meat pastries in Trakai), dark rye bread, and locally smoked fish from the Curonian Spit. Midus (mead) is the traditional drink.
Lithuanians are quietly proud of their resilience and independence. The Soviet period is remembered with complexity — ask respectfully. Amber is Lithuania's national treasure and excellent to buy as a souvenir. Tipping 10% is appreciated but not obligatory.
